In a tragic occurrence of events, at least 17 people have been left injured following a Russian airstrike that hit a maternity hospital located in the city of Mariupol says Ukraine.
While footage posted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shows how severely damaged the hospital was, no deaths or injuries have been confirmed among children said the head of the Donetsk region administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko.
The Ukrainian leader goes on to add that many people were left trapped under the wreckage, urging Western leaders and governments to enforce a no-fly zone.
According to Interfax Ukraine, the attack took place during a ceasefire treaty agreed on with the Russian side.
Despite insisting that it does not target civilian infrastructure, Russia has received heavy criticism from countless sources.
“We don’t understand how it’s possible in modern life to bomb a children’s hospital. People cannot believe that it’s true.” Mariupol Mayor Serhiy Olov told BBC in an interview.
“There are a few things more depraved than targeting the vulnerable and defenceless” tweeted British Prime Minister Borris Johnson.
The city, which has witnessed enough deaths for a 25 meter-trench (25 yards) to be dug by city workers as a mass grave, continues to be surrounded by Russian soldiers.
With multiple ceasefire attempts to allow civilian evacuation being broken, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia of holding over 400,000 people hostage.
In a call with Germany’s Chancellor, Russian President Vladimir denies such accusations, claiming the fault laid on militant Ukrainian nationalists.
With no end to the war in sight, international aid and relief efforts continue to flood into Ukraine, with hopes of helping those most affected by these recent events.
